October Monthly Memo: Why Calvert? Our Faculty Answer.

Every day, families make decisions about where their children will learn, grow, build friendships, discover their strengths and, ultimately, become the people God is calling them to be.

For some families, that decision comes easily. For others, it means comparing schools, asking questions, and wondering what truly makes one educational experience different from another.

Recently, we decided to ask the people who see the Calvert experience unfold every single day: our faculty.

We posed a simple question: “A family is deciding between us, a public school, and one other private school. They think all three are fine. Why do they pick us?”

We didn’t ask our teachers for statistics or talking points. We asked them to tell us what they have actually witnessed in their classrooms and hallways, the moments that remind them why Calvert Catholic Schools is Different by Design. Their answers reminded us just how much happens here that cannot be captured on a brochure.

DeAnna King shared an experience with her third-grade students after they attended Eucharistic Adoration for the first time. When they returned to the classroom, she asked how they felt after spending that time with Jesus. One student responded simply, “I heard Him. I heard Jesus speak to me!”

Dr. Lyons reflected on what he witnessed during Mass and Eucharistic Adoration. He described watching young children sit still, assume a posture of prayer, remain quiet and learn to control themselves. In those moments, he said he sees “the power of God at work at Calvert,” adding that it is incredible to watch children be transformed through these experiences.

Kory Wise spoke about the deeper questions he hears our students ask themselves: How do we know God exists? How do I live a good life? Why does Christianity matter? While the world around them will try to answer those questions, he sees Calvert as a place where students can individually discover answers grounded in the truth, beauty, and goodness of the Catholic intellectual tradition, truths that can ultimately change their lives.

These are not carefully crafted marketing messages. They are real moments and observations from the faculty members who spend their days alongside our students. And perhaps that is the most meaningful answer we can give when someone asks, “Why Calvert?”

Our faculty are the backbone of Calvert Catholic Schools. They are also among the greatest storytellers of who we are because they live our mission alongside our students every day.

This year, we have been intentional about sharing the Calvert Catholic Schools experience because we believe families in our community deserve to know what is happening inside these walls.

At Calvert, education is about more than preparing a child for the next grade level, graduation, or college. We are helping form the whole person: spiritually, academically, physically and socially.

There are many choices available to families when deciding where to educate their children. We want Calvert Catholic Schools to remain a strong and meaningful choice for families throughout our community, not simply because of what we say about our school, but because of what our students, faculty and families experience here every day.

So, when someone asks us, “Why Calvert?”

We could give them a long list of reasons. But sometimes, the most powerful answer is simply to tell them what happens here every day.

God Bless & Go Blue,

Dr. Jeremy Marinis
