September Monthly Memo 

Calvert is back in full swing. The school year has commenced, classrooms are filled, and fall athletics and extracurricular activities have resumed. The Dysard Athletic Complex is also undergoing continual development. It is invigorating to witness our campus once again filled with students.

Simultaneously, a group of our seniors are preparing for an experience that will extend far beyond Calvert’s campus.

We are grateful to be establishing a partnership with St. Oscar Romero Catholic School in Belize. Fourteen Calvert seniors, accompanied by Mr. Kory Wise, Ms. Marie Brodman, and me, will participate in this journey. During their time in Belize, we will facilitate a First Communion retreat for local students and engage in service within the surrounding community.

Our students will also have the opportunity to experience Belizean culture through various interactions. They will sample local cuisine, visit various regions, engage in catholic prayer and worship while simply experiencing and observing daily life. We hope the students return with a deeper understanding of another culture and, more significantly, a greater appreciation for the relationships formed during their journey.

The significance of this experience is heightened by the extensive preparation already underway. The students and adults participating are dedicating six months to formation prior to departure through regular Mass attendance and prayer formation. This period extends beyond logistical planning; it provides an opportunity to reflect on their motivations, their individual spiritual life, the true meaning of service, and the ways in which they may be called to support those they encounter.

Our prayer is that we arrive in Belize prepared to listen and to learn. Often, the most meaningful aspects of a mission emerge from this mutual exchange.

As the trip approaches, I invite the Calvert community to keep these students and their adult leaders in your prayers. Please pray that their months of formation prepare them for the experiences ahead and that the relationships established in Belize endure beyond their visit.

Opportunities such as this demonstrate that some of the most significant lessons occur outside the classroom. These lessons arise when students move beyond their comfort zones, act on their faith, and are open to new experiences. We are proud of their willingness to embrace this journey and look forward to sharing further updates with you.
